What is Alzheimer’s?
Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that affects thinking, memory, and behaviour. The illness usually appears slowly but can become increasingly worse to affect the individual’s ability to perform daily tasks. Alzheimer’s is currently the most common cause of dementia and accounts for up to 60 to 80% of all dementia cases. Contrary to popular belief, Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. Even though the most significant risk factor is increasing age, many still have early-onset Alzheimer’s under 65. Although there is currently no known cure for this illness, treatments help manage the symptoms and make life easier for those affected. These can slow the progression of the disease down but, unfortunately, can not stop them altogether.
